The method involves determining a start location and a destination of traveling, and retrieving data that is stored in a data base (23), where data comprises local conditions of a node point of travel, a characteristic of a collective transport unit and a road map of the transport unit. An optimum path is determined based on the data, where the optimum path comprises a displacement variable characterizing a path (43) that lies outside of the collective transport unit. A person (3) is guided on the optimum path by a path orientation instruction. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting a person during traveling.
