The method involves adjusting compression ratio of a cylinder of a reciprocating engine by a positioning device (24), where the engine comprises a crankshaft (12) with four stroke spigots (14). A different compression ratio is adjusted in the cylinder of the engine provided with adjustable compression ratio during an operation. The compression ratio is adjusted as a function e.g. environment temperature, of an operating mode of the engine. The compression ratio is adjusted as a function of a memory state of an energy storage device i.e. accumulator.
