The device has a transport apparatus for passing a preform into heating elements (101a, 101b) e.g. infrared heating elements, along a heat treatment track. The transport apparatus is designed such that spacing of the preform to the heating elements is varied while passing the preform into the heating elements along the heat treatment track. The transport apparatus comprises an endless rotating transport element and a gear wheel that exhibits varying radius and ellipsoidal cross-section. A spindle holding the preform is rotatably supported at the transport element by a spindle holder. An independent claim is also included for a method for thermal conditioning of a preform.
