The device has a rod body (2) with a rod element (4) whose one section (4a) is arranged at a holder and another section (4b) is inserted into an opening of a plastic preform to expand the preform in a longitudinal direction. The latter section includes a contact region (24) for contacting the perform. The rod body includes another rod element (6) that is detachably connected with the former rod element. The latter rod element is partially inserted into the opening to expand the preform. Cross sections of the latter section and the latter rod element sectionally differ from each other.
