The system has a storage unit (250) comprising a reference table representing a categorization of inclinations (k) in friction coefficient in two different size categories. A calculation unit (200) receives additional signals (Dret, Dexb, Dbr) that represents a deceleration torque exerted by a retarder on a wheel axle of a motor vehicle and by a exhaust brake on a drive axle of the vehicle, or brake pressure exerted in a brake system of the vehicle. The calculation unit determines the inclinations based on the additional signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for estimating a friction coefficient between wheels of a motor vehicle and a roadway (2) a computer program for performing a method for estimating a friction coefficient between wheels of a motor vehicle and a roadway (3) a computer readable medium for performing a method for estimating a friction coefficient between wheels of a motor vehicle and a roadway.
