Acceleration of the thread guide (7) is a function of the width of its transverse stroke. The electric motor (8) driving the thread guide has a controller (10). This subjects the thread guide to maximum acceleration only during transverse strokes where the point of reversal (14) is near the spool (3) edges. This is achieved by pulsing the motor current for a short interval, to 3-6 times, preferably 4 times the thermally-acceptable, continuous motor current. With shorter strokes, acceleration is reduced. In this case, the motor is subjected to a current which is 1.5-2.5 times the continuous motor current. The controller provides two values of acceleration, in accordance with the foregoing. Further reduced values, stepped in accordance with the widths of shorter strokes, may be provided. Accelerations may be adjusted continuously in this way. An independent claim is included for corresponding equipment.
