There is provided an electronic camera comprising an image pickup part for converting optical information into image data, a memory part for temporarily storing the image data, a recording part for recording the image data on a recording medium which needs to be subjected to an image data erasing operation before data is recorded on the recording medium, an erasing part for erasing unnecessary image data from the recording medium and a control part for causing said erasing part to physically erase the unnecessary image data from the recording medium after the image data has been stored in said memory part if a physically erased area or a unrecorded area to record the image data is not present in the recording medium. There is also provided an image data processing method comprising an image pickup step of converting optical information into image data, a compression step of compressing the image data, a storing step of temporarily storing the compressed image data, a recording step of recording the compressed image data on a recording medium which needs to be subjected to an image data erasing operation before data is recorded on the recording medium, an erasing step of erasing unnecessary image data from the recording medium and a control step of causing said erasing part to physically erase the unnecessary image data from the recording medium after said storing step if a physically erased area or a unrecorded area to record the compressed image data is not present in the recording medium.
