Preparing a composite material, resistant to water, based on vegetable fibers and alkaline silicate in aqueous solution, where in composite material, the alkaline silicate is crosslinked in situ during the preparation of the material, is claimed. Preparing a composite material, resistant to water, based on vegetable fibers and alkaline silicate in aqueous solution, where the alkaline silicate is of formula (nSiO 2, Me 2O) (A), and in composite material, the alkaline silicate is crosslinked in situ during the preparation of the material, is claimed. Me : an alkali metal; and n : molar ratio of SiO 2and Me 2O of 0.5-4. An independent claim is included for a waterproof material, obtained by the process, comprising dry plant fibers (10-95 wt.%); alkaline silicate solution (5-70 wt.%); emulsifier in solution (0.01-5); and vegetable oil (1-20 wt.%).
