The invention involves binders consisting of a solution of a mixture of potassium silicate and/or sodium silicate with lithium silicate that can be used, preferably for the production of welding electrodes, as well as a process for producing these binders and an application of these binders. The purpose of the invention consists of improving water resistance by a partial replacement by lithium of the sodium and/or potassium in the usual alkaline silicates because it is known that lithium silicate is only slightly soluble or even practically non-soluble in water. In this respect, it could not have been predicted that even the smallest proportions of lithium silicate would have such a strong influence on solubility or rehydration. (ERA citation 15:032704)
