An ultrasonic, sonic or acoustic vibration monitor apparatus comprising a portable unit that is capable of indicating a quantified level of bearing noise to an operator and capable of indicating the bearing noise before, during or after lubricant is added to machine or bearing such as to allow the operator to make an informed decision when to stop adding lubricant. The apparatus incorporates means to record the amount of lubricant that has been added to each bearing and the levels of vibration, and in particular the bearing noise, that each machine has experienced before and after the addition of lubricant and a means to identify individual bearings and/or machines both manually and/or automatically. The apparatus also incorporates means for storing data collected for individual bearings in such a way that historical records may be saved in a data repository such that inferences maybe drawn from historical data records and/or said data may be used for documentation purposes. The apparatus may also incorporate means for storing algorithms that may be used for determining the optimum level of lubrication for a particular bearing or machine. The apparatus may also incorporate means for storing or retrieving data locally at the bearing or machine lubrication point, for example to or from the memory of radio frequency identification tags.
