PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an egg shell quality-improving agent for improving egg shell quality, especially preventing discoloration of egg shell, improving egg shell coloring matter or improving egg shell strength. PSOLUTION: This egg shell coloring matter or egg shell strength improving agent has as the active ingredients 5-aminolevulinic acid, its derivative or their salt. The 5-aminolevulinic acid is shown by general formula (1) RSP2/SPRSP1/SPNCHSB2/SBCOCHSB2/SBCHSB2/SBCORSP3/SP. In the formula, RSP1/SPand RSP2/SPeach independently indicate hydrogen atom, alkyl group, acyl group, alkoxycarbonyl group, aryl group or aralkyl group, and RSP3/SPindicates hydroxy group, alkoxy group which may have substitutional group, acyloxy group, alkoxycarbonyloxy group, allyloxy group, aralkyloxy group or amino group.
