PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make antiparallel the direction of magnetization of a pair of ferromagnetic layers, in a state with an external magnetic field not being applied, and to suppress the occurrence of sudden output changes.;SOLUTION: An MR element includes an MR laminate 5, disposed between a pair of shield portions and a bias magnetic field application layer 6. Each shield portion includes single magnetic domains. The MR laminate 5 includes a pair of ferromagnetic layers which magnetically couples to a pair of single magnetic domain, and a spacer layer which is disposed in between the pair of ferromagnetic layers. The MR laminate 5 has a front end face 5c, a back-end face 5d and side faces 5e, 5f. The MR element includes two magnetic flux guide layers 90, which are disposed at positions adjacent to the side faces 5e, 5f of the MR laminate 5. Each magnetic flux guide layer 90 has a front end face 90c and a back end face 90d. The bias magnetic field application layer 6 has a front end face 6a, which is disposed opposite to both the back end face 5d of the MR laminate 5 and each back end face 90d of the two magnetic flux guide layers 90.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
