PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-domain vertical alignment(MVA) mode liquid crystal display which shows high reliability in the production process, preventing decrease in the luminance caused by disclination lines, and can perform high contrast display over the whole display area. SOLUTION: The device has a drive electrode layer, a transparent electrode layer, spacers disposed as columns or ribs between the drive electrode layer and the transparent electrode layer to hold a specified gap, a liquid crystal layer filling the gap between the drive electrode layer and the transparent electrode layer and having negative dielectric anisotropy, vertical alignment layers formed on the surface in the drive electrode layer side and on the surface in the transparent electrode layer side of the liquid crystal layer, so as to align the liquid crystal in the vertical direction, alignment control projections formed as lines on the surface in the liquid crystal layer side of the drive electrode layer and/or transparent electrode layer, so as to control the alignment direction of the liquid crystal, and a color layer. The spacers are disposed in the position, overlapping with the alignment control projections.
