PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify the movement locus of teeth of a flexible external gear with respect to teeth of a rigid internal gear relating to the shape of a rim neutral line of the flexible external gear and determine an accurate tooth profile of the rigid internal gear when the tooth profile of the external gear has an arcuate shape, in the flexible external gear and the rigid internal gear used for a flat wave gear device and having the same number of teeth.;SOLUTION: The arcuate tooth profile is imparted to the flexible external gear 4, and a contact point C between tooth profiles of the flexible external gear 4 and the D-side rigid internal gear 2 is found from an arc center A of the arcuate tooth profile of the flexible external gear 4 and from a momentary center S of relative movement between the gears 2, 4. Based on the contact point C, a main part of a tooth profile to be formed in the D-side rigid internal gear 2 is calculated. Since the tooth profile of the D-side rigid internal gear 2 can be accurately designed, engagement between the gears 2, 4 can be achieved with zero backlash, ratcheting torque can be increased, and continuous engagement can be achieved across a wide range of the movement locus of the tooth profiles of the both gears 2, 4.
