The invented method of and apparatus for checking relative horizontal movements of suspension structures of suspended bridges during static loading tests is characterized in that owing to a new combination of employment of currently available as well as low-price meters, even trained surveyors can make measurements of comparable level with uncertainties achieved by elite topographical surveyors using so far known methods wherein said combination is comprised of a kit of a water level with a laser radiator (4) provided with an adjustable clamping stand with a clamping surface (3) and a rectangular optical prism (5), a mechanical water level (6), a survey mark (10) with a graduated scale, a digital camera (12) and a compensation inclinometer (17). The resulting measurement value is determined as a sum of read-outs of a relative angular displacement of an element (2) on the surface of a bridge deck surface and a suspension structure (1) controlled by a shift of an image (11) of the laser beam on the survey mark (10) with the graduated scale and the read-out of a change in the bridge deck supporting element (2) incline controlled by the inclinometer (17) formed preferably by the mechanical water level (6) a micrometric screw (8) and an adjustable wedge-shaped insert (7).
