A significant improvement in the efficiency of laser beam amplifiers of the semiconductor type, having a wedge-shaped active region, is effected by the double passage of the laser beam through the active region of the amplifier. The beam to be amplified is input through the large side of the amplifier, and not through the small side as is the case in the conventional practice of single passage. After the first passage and the first amplification stage, the beam is guided back into the active region for a second amplification by means of a reflective surface either external to the amplifier or applied on its small surface.
