REAL TIME LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION FOR SECURITY APPLICATIONS

In highly secured areas there arises the need for providing efficient mechanisms to control the traffic by identifying license plate number of the vehicles. Traditionally manual approach of verifying the license plate numbers with the list of numbers that are allowed to enter that area used to identify vehicle by their plates. A license plate recognition system plays an important role in numerous applications, such as parking accounting systems, traffic la enforcement and road monitoring & security systems. This system can be useful for gathering statistics on road or at a checkpoint for custom checking or to recognize a stolen vehicle. A motion sensor camera and is used lo acquire a front/rcar view image of the vehicle. This process is divided into three phases: Detection of license plate, Character segmentation and Recognition of plate characters. The system uses filtering and some morphological operations for the extraction of license plates and character segmentation. Finally statistical based template matching is used for recognition of plate characters. The performance of the proposed algorithn has been tested on real images
