A pair process for the preparation of 4,17 (20) -Z-pregnadiene-3,16-dione of the following formula (IV), which comprises oxidizing the compound of the following formula (II) to provide 4.17 (20) -E-pregnadiene-3,16diona of the following formula (III), and achieving 4,17 (20) -E-pregnadiene-3,16diona of formula (III) resulting in any one the reactions selected from the group consisting of the photochemical reaction, thermochemical reaction, and the reaction catalyzed by acid. Wherein X represents a hydroxyl group (-OH) or an oxo group (= O), and a dotted line indicates the presence of a double bond at the C-4 or C-5 position.
