This invention is directed to pyrimidine and indolone derivatives which areselective antagonists for the GAL3 receptor. The invention provides apharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of acompound of the invention and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Thisinvention also provides a pharmaceutical composition made by combining atherapeutically effective amount of a compound of the invention and apharmaceutically acceptable carrier. This invention further provides a processfor making a pharmaceutical composition comprising combining atherapeutically effective amount of a compound of the invention and apharmaceutically acceptable carrier. This invention also provides a method oftreating a subject suffering from depression and/or anxiety which comprisesadministering to the subject an amount of a compound of the inventioneffective to treat the subject's depression and/or anxiety. This inventionalsoprovides a method of treating depression and/or anxiety in a subject whichcomprises administering to the subject a composition comprising apharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a therapeutically effective amount ofaGAL3 receptor antagonist.(see above formula)
