The present invention provides a fuel cell system capable of avoiding adisadvantage caused by the maintaining of a low-efficiency operation. The fuelcellsystem is configured to perform a higher-efficiency operation and a lower-efficiencyoperation having a larger power loss than a higher-efficiency operation. Acontrollerof the fuel cell system controls the fuel cell system to perform the lower-efficiencyoperation at a predetermined low temperature to raise the temperature of afuel cellin a shorter time than the higher-efficiency operation, and prohibits the low-efficiencyoperation so as to execute the higher-efficiency operation whenpredetermined conditions are established at the predetermined low temperature.The predetermined conditions may include a time when the generated power ofthefuel cell cannot be consumed, a time when this generated power cannot beaccumulated in a battery, or a time when the flooding of the fuel cell isgenerated.The fuel cell system avoids a disadvantage caused by the maintaining of a low-efficiency operation to improve the safety of a system operation.
