The invention relates to a method for producing hydrogen chloride (HCl) or an aqueous solution thereof using untreated water (RW), consisting of the following steps: a) a first electrolyte (El) containing chloride ions (Cl") is provided; b) electrodialysis is carried out, the first electrolyte (El) being subjected to a cathodic reduction resulting in a catholyte (K), the concentration of chloride ions (Cl") reducing in the first electrolyte (El), and the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH") increasing in the first electrolyte (El), and a product (P) in the form of hydrogen chloride (HCl) or an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride (HCl) thus being produced; c) at least one partial amount of the catholyte (K) is treated, the first elektrolyte (El) resulting therefrom by means of untreated salt water (RW), the concentration of chloride ions (CI'') increasing in the catholyte (K) and the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH") decreasing in the catholyte (K); and d) the treated catholyte (K) is at least partially reused after step c) as the first electrolyte (El) in step b).
