PURPOSE: A damping cylinder is provided to rapidly respond to water hammer because damping action is generated or released depending on insertion of a piston into a compression chamber. CONSTITUTION: A damping cylinder(200) comprises a piston rod(202), a cylinder(200a), a sealing plate(204), and a bypass pipe(207). The piston rod is coupled with the piston rod in an axial line direction of the cylinder. A compression chamber(200b) is formed in one side of the cylinder and has same diameter with the outer diameter of the piston. An orifice block(205) is fastened to the upper and lower parts of the cylinder by bolts and is coupled to the sealing plate. Upper and lower connection passages(206a,2006) of the orifice block are communicated with the cylinder and the compression chamber. The bypass pipe is coupled to the upper and lower connection passages and connects the compression chamber and the cylinder. A check valve(207a) and a variable valve(207b) are attached to the bypass pipe. In order to prevent hydraulic oil from flowing from the lower connection passage to the upper connection passage, the check valve blocks a pipeline. In order to flow the hydraulic oil from the upper connection passage to the lower connection passage, the check valve opens the pipeline. In order to only flow the hydraulic oil from the upper connection passage toward the lower connection passage, the variable valve opens the pipeline.
