PURPOSE: A precious metal catalyst supported on cation-substituted heteropolyacid for decomposing a lignin compound and a method for decomposing the lignin compound using the catalyst is provided to improve the yield of expensive aromatic compounds such as phenol and benzene under low pressures. CONSTITUTION: A cation-substituted heteropolyacid support is prepared by ion-exchanging heteropolyacid with alkali metal ions or ammonium ions. The heteropolyacid is in a Keggin structure and is selected from a group including 12-tungstophosphoric acid, 12-molybdophosphoric acid, 12-tungstosilicon acid, and 12-molybdosilicon acid. 1 to 40 mole% of one or more precious metals selected from a group including palladium, rhodium, and platinum are supported on the cation-substituted heteropolyacid support based on the total mole number of the support in order to obtain a precious metal catalyst. A decomposing process for a lignin compound is implemented using the catalyst at a temperature lower than 300 degrees Celsius and the pressure between 5 and 50 atm.
