The appliance i.e. washing machine has a tub (1) for receiving clothes to be cleaned, and a hot water supply line (4) for supplying hot water from outside of the machine. A temperature sensor (6) is provided for sensing temperature of water in the hot water supply line, and a tank (3) is provided for containing water. A control system introduces water from the hot water supply line into the tank when water temperature measured by the temperature sensor falls below a threshold value, where the water is introduced through a valve (7) between the hot water supply line and the tank. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a household appliance.
