The present invention relates to a method and arrangement for influencing the melting convection that occurs in a melt volume (7) in the production of a solid body by means of solidification from an electrically conductive melt. In the method, external, time-varying magnetic fields are applied to the melt volume (7) by means of devices (6) that generate magnetic fields. Said external, time-varying magnetic fields generate a distribution of Lorentz forces in the melt volume (7). The devices (6) that generate magnetic fields are controlled in such a way that the distribution of the Lorentz forces is asymmetrical about the central axis (8) of the melt volume (7) that extends perpendicularly to a phase boundary between the solid body and the melt. By means of the proposed method and the associated arrangement, higher flow velocities and thus improved mixing and a more homogeneous temperature profile in the vicinity of the phase boundary can be achieved compared to symmetrical distributions.
