For the operation of an electronically controlled gas cooker (100), an occupancy check is carried out on all the hotplates (112 to 115) of the gas cooker (100). It is then checked whether a first hotplate (KS1, 113) is suitable for a cooking vessel (KG, 116, 216) arranged on it. Then the hotplate (KSopt) of the gas cooking device (100) that is best suited for the cooking vessel (KG, 116, 216) is determined and communicated to the user. The actual burner output (PIst) is determined from the set cooking level and parameters for an interval cycle are determined as a function of a nominal burner output (PNom). The burner is then switched from continuous operation to clocked operation. An electronically controlled gas cooker (100) has four hotplates (112 to 115), each with an associated burner (117 to 120, 218) and an electronically controlled gas valve (104). The gas cooking appliance (100) is designed to carry out the aforementioned method and can be operated simultaneously in a power control mode and in a cooking vessel-hotplate assignment mode.
