The needle (10) has a needle shaft (12) provided with a needle hook (11), and a drive base (15) for movement of the needle. The drive base is pivotally arranged in a region of an end of the needle, and is movable from an inactive position, in which the drive base is directed against the needle hook, into an active position, in which the drive base is aligned perpendicular to the needle shaft, and vice versa by pivot movement. The drive base is lockable in its active position, and is supported at a resilient portion (13) of the needle shaft. An independent claim is also included for a flat knitting machine comprising a needle bed.
