The device (10) has determination units (11, 12) for determining substances or a portion of the substances in a body liquid. Carrier materials (14) i.e. test strips, with a code are inserted into the device and adapted to the substances to be determined and the bodily fluid to be examined. The determination units are activated by the code of the carrier materials. Receiving regions (13) are provided for the carrier materials. The carrier materials are encoded by barcodes. A smartphone (16) evaluates and displays measurement values.
