The device (1) has a force application portion (3) provided between a wheel installed at a wheel suspension and a contact surface of the wheel. An actuator (6) is operatively connected with the force application portion for checking a backlash of the suspension such that a rotational torque applied on the force application portion and the wheel by a tilting force that acts parallel to a center axis of the wheel. Relatively high static friction exists between the force application portion and the wheel, and the force application portion and the contact surface of the wheel. The force application portion is made of plastic material. The force application portion comprises a cured rubber coating that is formed between the force application portion and the wheel, and the force application portion and the contact surface of the wheel. The force application portion and the actuator are designed as hollow cylinder-shaped pipes. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking a backlash of a wheel suspension of a motor vehicle.
