The method involves activating fiber-optic measuring sections (M-1 to M-N) through an optical fiber switching unit (4) and emitting electromagnetic radiation from the electromagnetic radiation source. The electromagnetic radiation is brought in the activated fiber-optic measuring section. A place of malfunction-induced damping is determined in the backscattering profile of the switching status of the optical fiber switching unit by determining and comparing the damping surface in backscattering profile or by comparing the amplitude. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a fiber-optic measuring device, particularly temperature measuring device, which has a measuring unit.
