The method involves calculating a shortest path for a route such as between a start point and a destination point by using an algorithm stored in a map database of a navigation system. Utilization of map element e.g. road or turning maneuver, is restricted on the route for which time restrictions are stored in the map database. A time period for using the map element is determined based on an estimated time period of the shortest path of the route. Travel time for the route is determined based on distance i.e. straight line distance, between the start point and the destination point.
