The method involves detecting rotation speed information of a combustion engine (1), where the rotation speed information includes angular speeds of a crankshaft (9) of the combustion engine at various crankshaft rotational angles. Cylinder pressure in multiple cylinders (3-6) of the combustion engine is detected. A compression work in the cylinders is determined based on the detected cylinder pressure such that indexed moment is determined depending on the detected rotation speed information and the compression work. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining an indexed moment of a cylinder of a combustion engine.
