The device (100) has standardized connectors (110, 111) for contacting a parking brake motor (M), and a release signal identification device i.e. comparator (K1), for recognizing a release signal that is derived from an on-board power supply (108) of the parking brake motor. The release signal identification device provides a control signal to the parking brake motor over the connectors for moving the parking brake motor into a release position when the release signal is recognized. The release signal identification device comprises a filter (118). The release signal is voltage of about 24 volts. An independent claim is also included for a method for releasing a parking brake.
