The flow resistance values of the particle filter (22) are determined at different exhaust gas pressures in the exhaust passage (21) of exhaust gas treatment system (20) after the particulate filter. The defect of the differential pressure sensor is determined when the determined flow resistance values are different and the rear terminal (25) of the exhaust passage is closed. An independent claim is included for device for monitoring differential pressure sensor in exhaust gas treatment system of internal combustion engine.
