The engine (10) has a supply system for combustion air, and an exhaust system (12) provided with an exhaust line (12A), and particle filters (F1, F2) arranged in the exhaust line. A differential pressure sensor (16) is assigned to one of the particle filters to determine differential pressure (delta pF2) between an upstream spot and a downstream spot of the particle filter. A throttle valve is assigned to the particle filter in the respective exhaust line. The particle filter and the pressure sensor are arranged in another exhaust line in an exhaust bypass of the exhaust system. The particle filters are designed as soot particle filters. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining efficiency of a particle filter.
