The engine (1) has a compressor (3) provided with a gear box (4) that is designed as a continuous variable gear box, where the engine is operated in a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode. Drive torque is introduced into the gearbox via a drive train (5) over a crankshaft (6) of the engine for operating the compressor based on an adjusted transmission ratio, where settings of the transmission ratio is carried out based on engine speed.
