The method involves initiating and controlling combustion of particles in a particulate filter (42) during a regeneration process by intervention with an air flow rate and additional fuel injections. The regeneration process is divided into an existing regeneration phase and an extended regeneration phase for rapid oxidation of soot particles in the particulate filter. The regeneration process is carried out in the extended regeneration phase without utilizing post-injections that are applied in the existing regeneration phase. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter in an exhaust gas passage of a combustion engine.
