The method involves introducing combustion of particles to a particulate filter (42) during regeneration process by controlling local energy. The local energy is input based on input parameters. Heating capacity of the particulate filter is regulated such that flow and temperature conditions are controlled, determined and monitored by the particulate filter. A filter model of the particle filter is utilized to determine and store material data of the particulate filter from current input conditions. The particulate filter is divided into various portions. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling regeneration of a particulate filter in an exhaust gas passage of a combustion engine.
