The device has a particle sensor (10) soot coated with a functional layer (15) for converting long chain hydrocarbons, where the functional layer is a zeolite such as H-erionite, H-ZSM-5, beta-zeolite and Y zeolite. The particle sensor includes two mutually cross interdigital electrodes (12, 13) on a surface of the particle sensor. The surface and the electrodes are coated with the functional layer. The electrodes are formed from a material, and the material is immiscible or slightly catalytic active material for conversion of nitrogen monoxide to nitrogen dioxide. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing a function of a collecting particle sensor to determine particle contents in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.
