The method involves determining an estimated value of an amount of ammonia available in an exhaust gas catalytic converter (110) by a dynamic model for the loading of the exhaust gas catalytic converter in a predetermined time period. An actual quantity of the nitrogen oxides (121) of an exhaust gas flow (120) is determined. An actual value of a quantity of ammonia is determined depending on the actual amount of the nitrogen oxide. A parameter of the dynamic model is adjusted depending on the estimated value and the actual value.
