The method involves operating an internal combustion engine with a lean mixture composition when a fat mixture setting is determined still a lambda sensor downstream to a catalytic converter signalizes a predetermined value of the mixture composition or still a predetermined amount of oxidizing exhaust gas components flows through the converter. Oxygen amount stored in the catalytic converter is determined by evaluation of excess amount of reducing or oxidizing exhaust gas components. Measures for increasing temperature of the converter are changed based on the stored oxygen amount.
