The device has a cylinder (1), piston (2) and a cylinder head (3) forming a combustion chamber (6). A metal element (5) is designed as a microwave antenna, and extends into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine via an electrically insulating feedthrough (4). The metal element is connected with a microwave generator (7). Ionization-promoting additives are in form of graphite or metal atoms and attached to an air/fuel mixture. The piston is moved along a direction of the cylinder head in the combustion chamber, and compresses the air-fuel mixture.
