Device for igniting air-fuel mixture in internal combustion engine has end of coaxial waveguide structure forming ignition pin so free-standing plasma can be produced in air-fuel mixture by field structure protruding into combustion chamber
The device has a high frequency electrical energy source with a coaxial waveguide structure (2) into which the high frequency electrical energy can be coupled and that protrudes with one end into the respective combustion camber of a cylinder of the internal combustion engine, whereby a microwave plasma can be produced at this end by a high voltage. One end of the coaxial waveguide structure forms an ignition pin so that a free-standing plasma can be produced in the air-fuel mixture by a field structure protruding into the combustion chamber and the formation of the plasma can be supported by a light source at the end of the waveguide structure.
