A method of starting a spark ignition internal combustion engine comprising the steps of identifying a combustion chamber containing a volume of air 200, determining whether the cylinder is in a power stroke 202, admitting fuel to the combustion chamber to provide a combustible mixture 206 and then igniting the mixture 208. The method may also include a step of calculating the amount of fuel to be injected depending on the amount of air in the combustion chamber 204. The method may be carried out by a controller which may take the form of a device performing a computer readable programme code. The method allows a combustion engine to be started either with the aid of a starter motor which is smaller than would normally be used or even completely without the need for a starter motor.
