The method involves recognizing a passenger in a rear seat row (10) in a motor vehicle (1), where a rear axle steering (7) is operated in a restricted operating mode. The wheels (5) associated with a rear axle (4) are driven in the direction or opposite to the wheels (3) of a front axle (2) of the vehicle. A steering angle of the rear axle is delimited in the restricted operating mode of the rear axle, where the amount of the limit of the steering angle is adjusted. The restricted operating mode of the rear axle steering is automatically executed on detection of the passenger on the rear seat.
