The ballast has a load circuit at which a gas discharge lamp is attached, where the load circuit is provided with a clocked inverter. A heating circuit is provided for heating coils of the gas discharge lamp. A control circuit controls the heating circuit and the inverter. The control circuit determines an output signal by heating power transferred to the heating circuit depending on a straight line in a regulation circuit, and adjusts frequency of timing of the inverter. The heating circuit comprises a primary switch pulse width modulation clocked transformer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling heating power in a heating circuit for a gas discharge lamp (2) a microcontroller or an application-specific integrated circuit for executing a method for controlling heating power in a heating circuit for a gas discharge lamp.
