Gas discharge lamps cannot be used without their proper ignition andstabilization circuitry. In the early days of these modern light sources, this circuitry was considered to be a rather unimportant part of the lighting system and treated as such. Partly through research, this opinion changed with the progression of time. It resulted in the essential cross development between lamps and circuits. The complete evolution of lamp circuits is treated in this thesis, from the start of the choke ballast (core and coil choke) in 1944, up to and including the entry into the market of the modern electronic circuits. The operation of the various circuits is explained in detail, along with their changes over this period. The end result is reflected in today's exciting new circuits.
