The driving assistance system has an attention detection unit for detecting the attention of a driver of a motor vehicle (2) and a distance control system, which is formed in a manner such that the system is accelerated in an activated condition during a distance controlled subsequent operation of a setting speed, on the motor vehicle. The detected attention degree of the driver is defined by the attention detection unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for increase of driving safety of a motor vehicle.
