The method involves detecting a running ahead vehicle by a distance sensor (9 to 12) of driver assistance system (2) and measuring a distance for the running ahead vehicle. An image of surroundings (8) of a vehicle (1) is captured by a camera (6) of the driver assistance system during regulated driving, where the regulation is changed or canceled on the basis of the image. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle assistance system for a motor vehicle, which has a regulating device.
