The device (2) has a sensing unit (3) detecting environmental data (U) for describing a roadway region (F) in front and/or back of a motor vehicle (1). An evaluation unit (4) determines an obstacle (H) and obstacle height (D1) based on the environmental data. The evaluation unit determines obstacle width extending in a vehicle transverse direction and generates a control signal (S1) based on the determined obstacle width and the determined obstacle height. The evaluation unit supplies the generated control signal to a steering unit (5) for changing a yaw angle of the vehicle.
